A. Use of English
Upon the successful completion of Year 8 English, students will be able to:
1) use multiple paragraphs to talk about events/items within a broader topic
2) identify and use grammatical elements of words, including:
1.1. prefixes and suffixes
1.2. compound and hyphenised words
3) identify and use elements of compound and complex sentences
3.1. conjunctions
3.2. colons
3.3. hyphens
3.4. phrases and dependent clauses
3.5. quotations
4) identify common figures of speech
4.1. oxymoron and paradoxes
4.2. hyperbole
4.3. rhetorical questions (simple)
4.4. metaphors and similes
5) start to learn about the conventions of the 5-paragraph essay:
5.1. arguments have central ideas, are introduced, have supporting evidence, and are ‘wrapped up’ and reinforced at the end
Assessment, Learning and Teaching Use of English is relevant to each of the four skills of: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Care to constructively comment on and/or include some UE criteria in rubrics produced by teachers will support students’ developmental progress. |
B. Speaking and Listening
Upon the successful completion of Year 8 English, our students will be able to:
1) verbally explain, describe, narrate, analyse, persuade and discuss [using] simple ideas
2) negotiate roles in pair work
3) deliberately shape talk and speak at an appropriate pace and volume
4) use a wide range of vocabulary that is contextually-appropriate and clear in order to convince or explore ideas / feelings
5) be sensitive to turn-taking protocol and listen politely and attentively to the speaker’s purpose and message
6) begin to make significant contributions to discussions, start a discussion, share and/or brainstorm ideas and respond in a relevant, thought-out manner
7) demonstrate non-verbal communication
8) and discuss insights into text or speech selections
C. Reading
Upon the successful completion of Year 8 English, and in relation to a range of age-appropriate texts (poetry, non-fiction, short stories, novel extracts), our students will be able to:
1) identify the main points and themes throughout a text

7) give short personal (like / dislike) responses to texts, with some evidence
8) revise and build upon vocabulary skills in general and content-specific contexts
D. Writing
Upon the successful completion of Year 8 English, our students will be able to:
1) follow English conventions for multiple paragraph writing
2) use phrases, compound words, and other complex sentence structures
3) use conjunctions, quotation marks, and other grammatical structures in compound and complex sentences
4) keep a personal journal in an informal, reflective and conversational register
5) write a simple, five-paragraph composition
6) compare ideas / objects and communicate preferences
7) summarize / paraphrase the writing or spoken opinions of others
